Therapeutic Listening Program
Listening Therapy at Sensory Kids is a music based auditory intervention intended to support individuals who experience challenges with sensory processing disorders, listening, attention, and communication. It combines a sound-based intervention with sensory integrative activities to create a comprehensive program that is effective for diverse populations with sensory processing challenges.
The goals of Therapeutic Listening are to improve the following functions: sensory modulation, balance, movement perception, exploration, sense of physical competence, praxis, sequencing, social competence, and language.
Listening is a function of the entire brain and goes beyond the auditory system. Listening uses organised sound patterns to impact all levels of the nervous system to increase attention, balance, body awareness and control, communication, social engagement, and organisation of sensory input.
Initially we ask parents to complete the functional listening questionnaire. This helps us to better understand your child in completing the assessment and selecting the CDs. When the assessment is completed and reviewed, a report listing the key points observed, CDs suggested, and the reason each album is selected. The “listening” can now begin.
When the child is “listening,” they may be engaged in daily activities or other therapeutic activities. Some of these activities may include oral motor, respiratory, deep pressure, touch, or other activities that facilitate increased ability to perceive sensation and integrate it for use. Other children may be more active by jumping, climbing, moving through obstacles courses’ or performing other challenging activities that work on postural control and organisation.
When used alongside Sensory Integration Therapy, improvement is usually seen in:
Receptive and expressive language, including articulation
Self-motivation
Awareness of the environment
Postural security
Spatial awareness
Initiation of play behaviour
Initiation of verbal interaction
Modulation of sleeping, eating, toiling, alertness, and emotion
Stability
